A hole for the hood prop rod? Our Explorer has one. It also has a prop rod to go with it.

My NC did. I replaced it with a gas strut.

The current Mustangs have a prop rod for the hood.

I was appalled to learn our Odyssey came with one. 2015. I didn’t know they were still a thing. The worst part is the rod needs to be about 6 inches longer, or least that’s my wife’s opinion.

A hood prop rod? Yes, my Focus has one.
I strongly prefer gas struts for this, but I grew up with full-size cars that they bothered to put such niceties on. My Lincoln (2000) had struts from the factory.

I guess I can give them a break, they just got rid of the live axle.
Baby steps.

I suppose it’s still cheaper than putting a strut in.

My ‘17 FoST has one. Sounds like other Fords do too.

Seems like an American thing. Our Odyssey (2005, built in Alabama for USDM) and the Pacifica we just rented also had one (2017). Interestingly, though, the 2016 Impala we once rented had gas struts.

My 2017 Miata has a prop rod for the hood. My 2012 Veloster had one too, as does my wife’s 2012 Volt. The 2001 M Coupe has gas struts to hold up the hood.

Hey-o.

They are still there because its so cheap. They have had solutions to replace it for over a half a century, even for heavy hoods, but bending a metal stick is way cheaper. My 96 K1500 doesnt have one and doent have a strut ether. It has a coiled spring that once it gets past a certain point opens it the rest of the way and holds it. No one uses it because its not as aesthetically pleasing as a strut or some times even a hood prop. But its a cheap simple solution.

That and removing a hood spring is a good way to lose an eye.

Yup, and they get really freaking hot

Some nissans still do, but there are plenty of hood strut kits that are not terribly expensive.

I recently replaced the springs on my Camaro’s hood. I had to resort to using a cherry picker to stretch them enough to get them on the hinges.

Growing up with American economy cars I was confused when I opened the hood of my Fist car, a 92 Camry and it just held itself up. Lol. Although the old gas struts didn’t work below 40 degrees so in the fall/winter I had to keep a price of wood in my trunk.

Came here to say Miata and 4c, because #lightweight.

I haven’t noticed that on the one in the family, but it also just a V6/manual that serves as a highway commuter.

My 14 Roush also has one, even though they installed “Roush” struts as well to hold the hood up.

Toyobaru twins have one still, also has another point to mount it so it can hold the hood at almost 90 degrees.

Eh just use a zip tie, tie it to a part of the car and one on the inner circles and pop with a helmet on. But seriously though they work really well and last forever but if you do have to remove them for some reason, DUCK.

Also lighter. All my cars that weren’t cheap had two of them.

Which was the second thing I modified when I got my car.

My Dad’s 2017 Taco has one.

Ive been assaulted HARD by a hood on both of the cars ive owned with struts. They were old, but still I think I might have gotten concussed so fuck that. I dont find it hard to use the good old tried and true solution and that way my head doesnt get chopped off.

You mean a good prop...? Or a hole for the prop to go into...?
My 2009 Accent has a prop mounted underhood, so the hole for it when open is actually inside the front right fender as the prop flips down.

Add lightness

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever owned a car with one of those, and I’ve had models from five different decades now.
Wait, no, the Mustang did. And that was a ‘13 model, kinda backward.
